چکیده

This work follows mainly the ideas as well as the structure of Leech and Weisser’s article “Pragmatics and Dialogue”, Chapter 7 in “The Oxford Handbook of Computational Linguistics” [Leech and Weisser, 2003]. First of all we will clarify what pragmatics is all about and on which philosophical and linguistic concepts it is founded. In particular we will consider speech acts and other concepts that are of great importance in computational linguistics and are most relevant to the development of spoken dialogue systems. Furthermore, we will picture out the principal architecture of such systems, their prospective application to real world challenges, and the means to manage dialogues together with a current approach to standardize dialogues between human beings and computers. 1 What is Pragmatics? Pragmatics began to constitute itself as an important subdiscipline of linguistics in the late 1960s and has since gained considerable attention not only in the academic world with its own journals, handbooks, and conferences, but also in the industry, notably the service industry, due to its relevance to the development of spoken dialogue systems (SDSs). The idea behind these systems is that they should be capable to engage in meaningful dialogues with human beings in order to fulfill some tasks on behalf of the user much the same as a human service operator would do. In this work we will cover basic aspects of such systems and will provide sufficient theoretical background necessary to understand the functionality as well as the challenges the development of such systems encounter. First of all, we have to clarify concepts that are important with respect to pragmatics, including the term pragmatics itself. According to [Levinson, 1983], Pragmatics is the study of the relation between the structure of a semiotic system (in particular language) and its usage in context. But,

Towards a Formal View of Corrective Feedback

This paper introduces a formal view of the semantics and pragmatics of corrective feedback in dialogues between adults and children. The goal of this research is to give a formal account of language coordination in dialogue, and semantic coordination in particular. Accounting for semantic coordination requires (1) a semantics, i.e. an architecture allowing for dynamic meanings and meaning updat...

Pragmatics Through Context Management

Pragmatically based dialogue management requires flexible and efficient representation of contextual information. The approach described in this paper uses logical knowledge bases to represent contextual information and special abductive reasoning tools to manage these knowledge bases. One of the advantages of such a reasoning based approach to computational dialogue pragmatics is that the same...

Ludics, dialogue and inferentialism

In this paper, we try to show that Ludics, a (pre-) logical framework invented by J-Y. Girard, enables us to rethink some of the relationships between Philosophy, Semantics and Pragmatics. In particular, Ludics helps to shed light on the nature of dialogue and to articulate features of Brandom’s inferentialism.

Pragmatics In Speech Understanding

The pragmatics component of SPEECHLIS is a process which applies various facts about the speaker, the previous dialogue, and the domain of discourse to interpret utterances and respond appropr iately. For example, an early version of the system operates as a question answerer for the domain of lunar geology. In that domain one is usually not concerned with the particular scientists who investig...

Tracing Actions Helps in Understanding Interactions

Integration of new utterances into context is a central task in any model for rational (human-machine) dialogues in natural language. In this paper, a pragmatics-first approach to specifying the meaning of utterances in terms of plans is presented. A rational dialogue is driven by the reaction of dialogue participants on how they find their expectations on changes in the environment satisfied b...
